TAMIYA GRIFFIN, FOUNDER
Tamiya is a New Jersey native, wife, and mother of 4 children; 3 boys Isaiah, Kaiden, & Karter, and daughter Sarai. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park’s, School of Public Health with a Bachelor’s Degree in Family Science.
Providing services and support has always been a passion of Tamiya's as early as the 10th grade where she established an empowerment group, InsipHER. InspiHER provided high school girls with a safe space for self discovery, navigating their feelings, and sharing experiences.
It was always Tamiya's goal to expand InspiHER as she grew older, however it wasn't until she went to college and found herself switching majors from Education to Family Science which engulfed Maternal and ChildHealth,Health Disparities, and child development that her love for pregnancy and mothers grew.
During her senior year of college Tamiya became pregnant with her son Kadein and as a young mother and one of the first of her immediate family and friend groups to become pregnant, many times she felt like she didn’t have anyone to connect with. During her postpartum period she was able to reflect on her own experiences and realize the lack in support and education for first time young black mothers regarding reproductive health, prenatal care, postpartum care, and newborn care had existed, from then The Motherhood Academy was birthed.
Tamiya has worked with teen parents, done outreach and advocacy work with pregnant and parenting domestic violence survivors, and worked at the Department of Health in Perinatal and Reproductive Services combating racial disparities in black mothers and babies.. She is also trained as a Birth and Postpartum Doula, Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Advocate, and currently training as a Childbirth Educator.
